The Wednesday Night War: NXT vs. Lucha Underground Week 1 [2/18/15]

When WWE moved NXT from Thursday nights to Wednesday nights some people thought it might be in direct competition with what could arguably and easily become the best promotion in the world as they have already possibly become the second best in the U.S. behind WWE.

So from now until the end of time (or when one of the shows should change days) I will try to give a brief recap of both Lucha Underground and NXT by awarding points randomly for each segment and match.   This will help us to calculate who is winning on a weekly basis and overall.   Let's begin!

Right off on Lucha Underground we had Chavo Guerrero Jr. use a chair to get disqualified when facing Mil Muertes.   Chavo Jr. would later on in the show say he's quitting because all of Mexico is still coming for him.   This also put into play a bit of the Mil Muertes/Catrina angle as they are apparently breaking up so despite the finish this was decent.

Points Awarded: 5

Dario Cueto gave a pep talk to The Crew and said that they had been the dominant force he had hired in Lucha Underground since day one.   Even if you've been watching since day one, this was a nice reminder going into their main event match tonight.

Points Awarded: 3

In a bit of an upset (maybe?) Ivelisse said she couldn't watch Son of Havoc lose anymore and challenged Angelico herself.   She got the victory and Angelico made some kind of comment afterwards about how he'd go with her again one on one any time, but in a way that hinted at something sexual.    I'm still not big on women fighting men for reasons previously stated but if they must face each other why not have Ivelisse pin them all?   Ivelisse for Lucha Underground Champion!!  (Yes, she really is that good)

Points Awarded: 15

The third match of the evening saw Texano pin Super Fly and I kind of feel badly that Super Fly was used as a sort of jobber here.   I can't quite put my name on who exactly but it seems like there should have been some former TNA or WWE employee who could have come in and done the job.   JTG?   I want to say Heath Slater but he's still somehow in WWE.   And what about those other guys we've seen in Lucha Underground who are established as jobbers?  Famous B?  Ricky Mandel?   Matt Striker?  Eh, I kid (sort of).   I don't think this did too much damage to Super Fly as we all kind of expected this to happen.   I'm really only awarding this one any points because of the Alberto El Patron beat down that came after the match.

Points Awarded: 3

And in the main event, Sexy Star, Pimpinela Escarlata and Mascarita Sagrada defeated The Crew as Big Ryck looked on near the end and cost them the match.    I'm neither a fan of Sexy Star or Pimpinela but perhaps this victory will send their characters into some sort of direction with meaning and just not as a comedy act.   What would actually be fitting at this point though would be if during their next match they just got singled out and taken out by The Crew.   Really send a message, you know.   Oh well, points for Big Ryck having an eye patch now.

Points Awarded: 10

Total Points for Lucha Underground This Week: 36

There were four matches on NXT and one main point beside that and, no, I won't be awarding Kevin Owens any points for his "start the show off without any real energy or feeling" promo.   The first match saw the return of Rhyno to WWE (sort of) as he squashed Elias Sampson.     Pretty simple for what it was, but I'd like to see Rhyno work longer matches and against the likes of Kevin Owens, Baron Corbin and who it looks like he's here to feud with: Finn Balor.   I'm also fairly interested in seeing other possible returns via NXT and if it gets older wrestlers (ECW era) back in the door and into the action figure line then it will all be worth it.    Still, despite the buzz there wasn't much to this particular match.   It's more of a reading "Rhyno's back" somewhere than needing to seek out the match and watch it.

Points Awarded: 2

The second match saw Enzo Amore & Big Cass defeat The Vaudevillains which is strange for the VV but good for Enzo & Cass.   It was an all right match, though nothing to write home about, and the post match work by Blake and Murphy, trying to steal away Carmella just seemed... what's a word that has greater magnitude than awkward?

Points Awarded: 3

In the only worthwhile segment of the night Solomon Crowe made his debut (finally) after attacking CJ Parker, who threatened to take the show hostage because he was left off the live special.   Need he be reminded that on the previous live special he got killed by Kevin Owens?   I was happy to see Solomon Crowe but know this was only a moment and when the matches come it will begin to feel much more special.

Points Awarded: 6

In a non-title match new NXT Women's Champion Sasha Banks defeated Blue Pants.   Sasha Banks has potential as champion but I was most excited to see Blue Pants back and in a role that didn't involve Carmella.   Could Blue Pants become a regular in NXT?   I hope so.   She was a great amount of talent and potential.   I don't care about women in wrestling in general but I like Blue Pants and Ivelisse, both of whom I got to see this week on opposite shows.     Let's get this Blue Pants chant started, people!!

Points Awarded: 8

With what was booked as the main event, Kevin Owens defeated Adrian Neville in a non-title match.    This wasn't a bad match and it wasn't great either but I think the biggest let down for me was that it just didn't make sense.    If Adrian Neville pinned Kevin Owens clearly that would put him in contention for a title shot, right?   But Neville just lost a contender match to Finn Balor, um, last week.   More than anything else it's a slap to the face of Finn Balor (and poor booking) because it makes his win seem meaningless as Neville no longer has to go start back down the ladder but rather had the potential right then and there to secure a title shot.    Isn't there someone else Regal could have booked here?  Someone who didn't just lose a chance to get a title shot?   Hideo Itami?   Total lack of logic, which is not typical for NXT.

Points Awarded: 5
