REVIEW: World Wrestling Council WWC Puerto Rico TV 1/18/15

If you want to get right down into it, there are probably three main wrestling promotions south of the United States border.    AAA is the one I'm most familiar with and CMLL would be next as a lot of the luchadores you can think about and say "Where did they go?" if they were in AAA and no longer are probably ended up in CMLL.    Then there is also the WWC promotion which seems to be a good thing to watch and, yeah, maybe I am watching it a little bit too because of the upcoming Alberto El Patron involvement.     I remember times when I've waited seemingly months for new full shows to appear on the AAA Lucha Libre YouTube page (Guerrera De Titans) and even though I still have some AAA to watch I figure I can watch this in between the combination of AAA and CMLL.    So here we go- my first experience with WWC!  (Though I've heard a lot about it and have watched matches from the past because of Bruiser Brody, Carlos Colon and all that)

The show opened with a video package.   The music reminded me of the current ROH theme song a little bit and the video itself looked like it was from ECW Hardcore TV though it obviously had clips from WWC.    The first impression that I get is that the ring looks small.

Match One: Chicky Starr / Xix Xavant vs. Los Templarios (Ash Rubinsky / William de la Vega)

As I searched for who was in this match and picked up names and faces, I realized that the commentators did refer to Ash as "Super Ash" more than once I think.   This match also was the first on the card called "Euphoria - Tag 1" which was on 1/3/15 so it would make sense for the match to air now, after the fact.     So Chicky Starr wrestles in black pants and a black t-shirt.    He definitely looks like someone out of the old ECW because of it.    His partner, Xix Xavant, has tights on and his face painted so he's some cross of The Great Muta and Vampiro in that sense.    On the opposition we have Ash, who kind of looks like Perro Aguayo Jr. with longer hair and his partner is in black tights with a red shirt and I just kept thinking of him throughout the match as looking like The Mountie.     This is a somewhat traditional tag team match as Xix Xavant is worked over for most of it and Chicky Starr gets the hot tag and eventual win.  It might not have been the best match ever or even close to it, but it was a nice way for me to sort of get my bearings in this new WWC water.

An ad is shown for Carlito vs. The Mighty Ursus.   I thought it was a triple threat match until I realized that The Mighty Ursus has a manager.    So The Mighty Ursus is a masked luchadore while his manager has long hair and *kind of* looks like Cibernetico but is usually dressed nicely.     There are actually lots of promos shown for upcoming matches and I see some familiar names like Ricardo Rodriguez and some of them not so familiar.    Some from the last match even.    This also reminds me a lot of the old ECW Hardcore TV show.   They're selling their own product and rightfully so.

Footage is shown of the losing team from the first match breaking up.    After losing to the Sons of Samoa, William de la Vega beats up Ash.    They are scheduled for an upcoming match as their graphic will be shown throughout the show.     Ash has a backstage promo and then so does William de la Vega.    A lot of this show seems to be merely a promotion for a bigger show, a pay-per-view perhaps.

More sells for that big card which says "La Hora de la Verdad" on it and that roughly translates to "The Moment of Truth".    It's only $10, but I think that's for tickets as it looks like it says children under a certain age are $5 and not a PPV price, sadly.

Match Two: Chicano (Champion) vs. El Bronco *WWC Puerto Rican Title Match*

While this was also on the same card as the first match it was not the match immediately following it.    According to Cage Match dot net that particular card had eight matches so maybe they will be broken up into four weeks worth of television but they will have more of the main events (top four matches on the card) as headliners for each show.   It's my best guess.    El Bronco jumps Chicano outside of the ring before the match even really starts, as Chicano is making his way to the ring.    The arena looks like a big, fairly empty auditorium.    Despite the photo on Cage Match dot net, Chicano is not masked though it does say "Cotto" on the back of his trunks for some reason.    El Bronco wears a singlet and looks like a larger version of Taz as he just destroys Chicano to start this match.    This is not your high flying lucha libre as El Bronco favors the rest holds.    There is another "commercial" for the upcoming event and when we come back from that Chicano is in control.   Chicano kind of looks like MVP but is in trunk shorts.    After a quick roll up, Chicano wins to retain his title.   This makes sense, as Chicano is still the champion if you've been following along with the numerous upcoming card promotions.

We go into a promo from Ricardo Rodriguez followed by one from Chicano, as they will face off at the next big event.    A plug is made for WWCPPV.com and I must go to that site now.   It says that WWC will have their 41st Anniversary show on October 25th and it will be available on iPPV through this site.    That can't be for 2015 can it?   No promotion can possibly book that far in advance... can they??   It also says it's dedicated to Chicky Starr, who a google search reveals is semi-retired.

Masked men dressed like they are in an army cut a promo and take out a masked man and I'm not sure who he is.    Then they get into the ring and take out Carlito which gives The Mighty Ursus the win over him.    The manager of The Mighty Ursus is then shown in an office complaining to the authority figure of WWC about how his client should be champion but there is some disagreement about how the match went down which is probably all just build to the match between these two that takes place on "Euphoria" with a ring of fire.   Yes, really.    Carlito cuts a promo and so does The Mighty Boosh... I mean The Mighty Usurper... I mean The Mighty Ursus and his manager.

I looked up the 41st Anniversario for WWC and Cage Match dot net reveals it was last October not this one coming up so we'll just keep things nice and simple by moving forward here.      I'm not sure when most of the matches being advertised during this show will take place because some of them aren't on the Euphoria card and there are two nights but Ash and William de la Vega are still a tag team on night two because that's the match where they break up after losing to the Sons of Samoa, highlighted previously in the show.

So I might not know what's going one exactly and Cage Match dot net cuts off their results from WWC after Euphoria - Tag 2 (which was January 4th, 2015) so I'm not sure what to expect in these WWC episodes that will bring me up to date on the weekly episodic level but I'm going to buckle in for the ride because, hey, Carlito is the WWC Universal Champion and that's cool with me.
